Digital Music Technology at Bowling Music Studios

 

 

   Electronic music is an exciting and compelling subject centered around music  creation software. Synthesizers - the instruments of electronic music; MIDI - the language of electronic music communication; audio processing and recording, all come together in today's  DAW's (Digital Audio Workstations) that are the hub of digital audio production and recording. All of this wonderful musical functionality can be available to you on your PC (desktop, laptop, Windows or Mac) which will become the center of your own electronic music creation.

 

Our electronic music courses at Bowling Studios teach the theoretical functional elements, as well as helping you to develop a wide range of practical and relevant music technology skills.

  • ·         Create Instruments with Samplers and Synthesizers
  • ·         Create Music with MIDI and loops
  • ·         Record and process audio on your PC
  • ·         Mix and balance music tracks, share your music and burn CDs

 

Beginning with the fundamentals, our "Elements of Digital Music Technology" is a foundation course where you will be introduced to how sound works; the tools and terms of digital music and audio; MIDI the language of electronic music; synthesizers the instruments; creative audio processing tools;  digital audio recording and production concepts; score writing and sharing your work on CD or the Web.

 

Upon completion of the course, students will be familiar with the language of digital audio, the theoretical meaning of major terms, and their practical applications, and will recognize the various functions of digital audio work stations. They will begin to develop a portfolio of their own work consisting of compositions, recordings and sound resources, and will be able to use their PC for making music.

 

Term:  10 weeks (10 x 1.5hr sessions)

Prerequisites: Laptop PC (Windows or Mac) running Digital Audio Workstation software that can record and edit MIDI and Audio data, and has at least one software synthesizer module.  Examples:

  • ·         Cubase
  • ·         Reason
  • ·         Ableton
  • ·         ProStudio1
  • ·         Logic
  • ·         Digital Performer

 

In addition to the PC & software,  students should have at home a keyboard for performance data entry and a sound monitoring system. This can be headphones, but near field loudspeakers are recommended. headphones and keyboard and USB connection cable will be available for the lessons, but you should bring along your laptop running the software.

 

Reading material and instructive internet site urls will be given at the lessons along with handouts, but please be prepared to take some notes.
